Chevy Chase Shingle Style
This garden is the product of a long-term collaboration with clients who envisioned a lush, relaxed landscape to complement their historic Shingle Style home. We formalized the horseshoe entry drive with exposed aggregate paving and historic-style brick, while stucco walls and brick piers flank the driveway leading to a lower-level garage. A utility and trash corral doubles as a retaining wall, offering both function and form.
In the back garden, a pool sits opposite the garage. Since historic regulations prevented centering the pool with the garage, we added a bocce court paved with crushed oyster shells, bordered by rosemary, thyme, and Amsonia. A charming Walpole shed balances the rear landscape, bookending the pool and bocce court.
Initially, preserving the side yard as a play space for their children was a priority. But five years later, the clients transformed part of the lawn into a bountiful vegetable and herb garden. With guidance from Homegrown & Harvested, we designed raised planters and beds for crops like asparagus and strawberries, while metal arbors support climbing melons and tomatoes.
Throughout the garden, a blend of native and heirloom plants — Rhododendron, holly, Sweetbay Magnolia, lilac, hydrangea, and David Austin roses — adds timeless beauty and charm.
