Falls Church Hybrid
The goal of this Moore Architects design was to connect a traditional home to a casual “workshop” in the rear yard and provide an area for croquet and other lawn sports. We created a greenspace, shored up the grade with sculptural mountain boulders, and added a regulation croquet pitch that required a highly engineered lawn with a sports-quality drainage system built up to grade. Colonial steppers flow down the grade with an edge to keep balls from rolling off. While the gardens around the house are more traditional, as the landscape nears the workshop our plant selections become more reflective of the Virginia woodlands, with a mix of native shrubs and ferns. The garden has a simple presence, planted with cultivated species like Roses, Camellias, Crepe Myrtles, and fragrant herbs for a beautifully scented yard.
